Weeding Can Drive You Insane!

I have a sort of naturalized garden around the base of my (tilting) birdbath--wildflowers and forget-me-nots and sweet alyssum. They start to dry up in the summer and reseed: in the winter they disappear to return again in spring.

After the spring rains it can be difficult to sort the flowers from the weeds. Plus you have to get down on your knees, plus you have to dig out the gloves and the hand-held-hoe ...

But today it is beautiful out, and I decided to do what I have long pledged to do: to weed just a few minutes each day, and eventually I will get through the worst of it.

So I began. I got at least seven dandelions dug out (deep roots those blasted things) and lots of Spanish wheat grass (they brought it to California for their cattle and it is everywhere).

Got about ten minutes into it, and my hand hoe cracked, then broke. Handle fell off. Rust and years had done their work.  Don't think I have a welder handy to fix it. No village blacksmith to turn to. My father would have used duct tape, but I can't see how that would work in this particular case.

I sat on a stepping stone and looked at the weeds.  They seem to want to stay where they are. Who am I to disagree?

I am the brute strength in our yard and garden. I mow and edge, and dig holes where directed. Lift heavy things, too. What are these weeds of which you speak?

Come down any time and I'll have a new hand hoe for you. Ha!
