Pre-Order New Book from History Press or Amazon!

This mock-up copy of a book used to be called "the galleys" in the publishing business.
Now it is called the "PDF version."

Even if you love to write. Even if you are good at writing and it gives you pleasure. Even if every aspect of writing is a positive experience for you. Writing is still hard work.

So when a book is completed you have to take a little time out to say: "Hooray!"

My new book, Historic Bay Area Visionaries tells the story of six people in California history, from 1781 through 1915, so it felt six times as complicated as writing California Apricots: The Lost Orchards of Silicon Valley, my previous book. This time, I had to research six very different stories including the story of: Lope Inigo, an Ohlone Indian; Juana Briones, a Californio pioneer; Robert Louis Stevenson, a Scotsman who came to the region in 1879; Sarah Winchester, a wealthy widow seeking a new life; Thomas Foon Chew an immigrant who became a millionaire; and Charles Chaplin, a visionary who helped found an international industry from the little Bay Area town of Niles.

The publisher is headquartered in South Carolina and just as we completed the proofing process, Hurricane Florence slammed into the Carolina coast. Having been through four hurricanes during the years I lived in Florida, I was worried for the people there. And I wondered if the aftermath--which often involves flooding and loss of electricity, among many other issues--would delay publication of the new book, set for release October 15.

But the book is now up on the web site of the History Press and is available for pre-orders. I just wanted you all to know about it. Click the links below to get your order in early! Thanks for all the kindness and support I received from so many friends, family members and those in the community who were sources for the book. When hard work is done, it feel good, to enjoy the result. Even if it is just for a moment.
